PLEXIGLAS® HAS A LONG SERVICE LIFE

There is a large number of transparent plastics that can hardly be distinguished when purchased. Their chemical structures, however, are very different - and hence their properties. This especially shows in outside applications: Sunlight, wind and weather effects can cause dramatic changes in many plastics within a few years. They cannot stand weathering any longer, may turn yellow, may embrittle and break. PLEXIGLAS® does not!

Long-lasting success

Due to its long service life, PLEXIGLAS® may easily be used for decades. We guarantee that most of our clear-transparent solid sheets, multi-skin sheets, corrugated sheets, blocks, tubes and rods marketed under the PLEXIGLAS® trademark will show not yellowing and retain a high level of light transmission for 30 years. In addition, we guarantee the color stability of colored variants for 10 years.

The period of use of PLEXIGLAS®, however, varies depending on its purpose. From several days in trade fair construction to many years in aircraft cabin windows, glazing of valuable pictures in museums and structural applications all over the world. Periods of use of up to 30 years and more are common for outside applications such as façades, noise barriers, industrial or private roofing; this contributes to the postponement of product renewal and consequently resource savings.

Not a disposable product

The sustainability of a material, however, depends on other factors, for instance on what happens to it when the end of its service life is achieved. Plastics, but also metal and glass, should absolutely be disposed of properly so that they affect the environment as little as possible. This applies to disposable items such as packaging as well as for durable goods for which PLEXIGLAS® is commonly used. PLEXIGLAS® does not represent hazardous waste and may therefore be recycled in the positive sense of circular economy at the end of its service life.
