New Applications
Project Description
This was the ultimate brief! Design your own design office…..(although we still had a tight budget!). We wanted to create a workspace where all staff are within talking and hearing distance of each other – to ensure communication was not compromised. We also wanted to incorporate a kitchen/coffee making facility and stool height meeting area into our general office environment. A library was required for our reference materials – plus a separate meeting zone for those few situations where the informal meeting zone was inappropriate. Aesthetically, our brief to ourselves was - to design an office for ourselves with “light/bright/fresh/translucent” as guiding cues. [More information…]
We did not have enough space to accommodate our wish-list…. However, the space was high enough for us to create a partial mezzanine floor for the library and meeting area. This solved our space problem. The workstations are set out in a line along a wall under the mezzanine. This positioning facilitates the close communication we desired and also gives a feeling of intimate space because of the lowered ceiling created by the mezzanine floor over. We chose to use PSP Plexiglas products to help meet our brief of “light/bright/fresh/translucent”. Four elements within the office have PSP Plexiglas products as the essential component: 1.The balustrade paneling to the stair and mezzanine – the green chosen for the mezzanine because of the eerie green backlight that filters through to the mezzanine library area. 2.Multiwall white to divide the mezzanine meeting area from the server area. The multiwall chosen because it works as a back-lit whiteboard (whiteboard markers have an interesting three-dimensional quality when used on this material – and it can be wiped off ) 3.Green Plexiglas sheet as a splash back to our kitchen bench. The sheet has been folded to create two shelves above the bench – one material therefore forms the wipeable .splash back surface, shelving and wall colour. 4.The centrally located stool height meeting table is a fabricated metal spine structure wrapped in folded Snow Plexiglas. The sheets were folded to an extremely fine tolerance to wrap around the ends of the steel ribs. Sunlight through the front window of the office backlights the Plexiglas and reveals the steel spine beneath. We were our own client – so no surprise that we are extremely happy with the result! The resilience of the Plexiglas splash back and table surfaces have been a pleasant surprise. We had expected to compromise on serviceability to achieve the aesthetic but this has not been the case. The overall effect makes us feel confident we are giving the right impression to our clients.
